Elk Horn Rod Review - 2006/07 - ES1267-6 Spey Rod
Testers:
Great Lakes Steelhead Fly Fishing Guides Greg Senyo and John Miller
Description and rod type:
12'6 foot 6 piece two handed spey rod - Model: ES1267-6
Rivers fished:
Muskegon River, MI
St. Joe River, MI
Garden River, ONT
Maumee River, OH
Field Notes:
Right out of the tube we were impressed with the finish and craftsmanship of the rod. The cork grip size at just over 12 inches and the butt section at 4 inches this rod had a great feel and was proportioned perfectly, the length of the cork is very important in the over all comfort and castability of the rod . The black anodized reel seat and hardware on the rod complimented it very well and were pleasing to the eye.
During casting in the beginning of rod use, the lower three sections of rod would loosen quite frequently do to the spey rod's twisting during casts. I find this normal in newer spey rods; we applied bee's wax to the male connections and never had a problem again while fishing and testing.
The ES1267-6 was loaded with both 6 wt, 7wt, 8wt spey lines. Casting with the 6wt line was decent but was too light for this rod, but loaded with 7wt line this rod was a pleasure to cast and was easier to mend and perform change of direction casts. An 8 wt line did not differ much from the 7wt line, but on longer casts over 90 feet the 8wt line carried the distance slightly better and was easier to mend. Tradition spey casts, High stick nymphing, and Great Lakes indicator spey techniques were used for this test.
This rod is very light and we experienced little fatigue during several days of casting and mending, and after some initial use this rod began to feel and more like a one piece than a six piece rod. The Action of this rod was great and you always had a good feel and control of the line and fly presentations.
The durability of this rod was incredible, Several times the rod was hit against the drift boat, dropped on stones, and bent to the max on some game fish not intended for a 6/7 wt rod. With that being said this rod is very forgiving and an excellent rod for spey casters and fisherman of all categories from Beginners to veterans.
Fish we were targeting during this test include:
King Salmon up to 30 pounds
Pink and Pinook Salmon (cross between pink and Chinook) up to 5 and 15 pounds
Summer and fall run Steelhead from 4 to 17 pounds
Small mouth Bass
White Bass
The only complaint was about the rod tube. It was big enough to fit two full rods in it. A Rod sock would be preferred over the built in holder to allow for the use of a smaller diameter rod tube, especially if this is a travel rod design, when space is limited during country excursions, Back packing, and Airline flights.
As an over all rating this rod is as good as any spey rod we have had the privilege of using, and with a price tag of around $350.00 dollars; Elkhorn has the Average and Everyday fly fisherman like us in mind without sacrificing quality work. Thank you for the opportunity and privilege of testing one of your products.
Sincerely,
Greg Senyo & John Miller
