Brian, I just wanted to write you and tell you about my experience using the 1007-4 (4 piece, 10 ft, 7wt). Every year in January and February, I go upstate New York and fish the Salmon River for some of the best Steelhead fishing in the country. For the past 4-5 years, I’ve been using the 1007-4 10ft 7 wt. Its always served me well.. Ive had fish close to 18 lbs in that river on that rod and your reels as well. This last trip was different though. The weather was brutally cold and my guides were icing so badly that I could barely strip line back to my rod tip. I was frustrated and ready to leave. Then I saw a guy Spey casting, and not “de-icing” his guides every cast. So, I decide, on the fly, to switch up and go with a “spey type” cast and drift rather than stripping. Well, I must say this worked WONDERS. I was able to cast this rod as a one handed spey rod with ease (I never actually did it before this trip). A couple pointers from the spey guy next to me, and I was easily reaching the other bank of the river on every single cast. Best of all, my guides stopped icing up, my left hand was warm (sitting in my pocket), and I was able to fish a more traditional setup consisting of a small shot above a fly rather than bottom bouncing a pencil weight. I also had my biggest fish of the trip using this method, 14.5 lb steelhead who ate a #12 Black Stone Fly. Anyway, I just wanted to say thanks for making such good rods. Great customer service makes a difference for Elkhorn - ( http://bplans.typepad.com/blog/2008/01/great-customer.html) I love passing on good customer service stories in my blog posts? Why? Because I want business decision makers to know that putting a little extra effort into customer service makes a difference and the free publicity is a nice way to reward good customer service. Writing this post was especially fun for me because it involves a passion of mine – fly fishing. Last year, I was looking for a good “backup” fly fishing rod and stumbled into a small company called Elkhorn Fly Rod and Reel out of Loveland Colorado. The Elkhorn name kept coming up in on-line fly fishing community sites so I decided to take a look at what they had to offer. Elkhorn isn’t a well-know brand like Sage or G Loomis but I decided take a chance on one of their Nomad rods and T Series reels because they looked like a good value and I like to support small local businesses when I can. My rod and reel arrived without delay and I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of both – considering the relatively low cost of the rod and reel combo. My “backup” rod looked almost as good as my $600 G Loomis rod. I also appreciated the high-quality rod holder that Elkhorn included with the rod. At this point I was already a happy customer. This isn’t a fly fishing blog so I’ll try to stay focused on the customer service story and skip the rod and reel review. A couple days after I received my order it occurred to me that I should have a cover my my shinny new reel. Covers are often included with reels so I decided to call Elkhorn to make sure I didn’t somehow miss out on a reel cover that should have been included with my order. So I called Elkhorn. To my surprise Brian Chavet, the owner of Elkhorn picked up the phone. I had read that he often did but it kind of caught me off guard. I asked him about the reel cover for my reel and he explained a very friendly way that a cover isn't included with the reel I ordered. I was fine with this answer considering the cost of the reel. Brian offered to send me a cover for the reel. At first, I hesitated, because I thought he was going charge me for the cover + shipping which I could easily get locally for less. I was completely blown away when Brian offered to send me the cover completely free of charge and shipped at his expense. At this point, Brian’s approach to customer service had already turned me into a lifetime customer and an evangelist for his products. But this isn’t the end of the story. My reel cover arrived quickly – Brian didn’t try to save a few dollars by sending the cover the least expensive way. It was a great quality cover that fit the reel perfectly. Included in the package was a “Courtesy Card” (pictured above) with Brian’s name and phone number on it and 8 fly fishing flies appropriate for the waters I fish – again, I was blown away. A fly fishing fly costs about $2 in a local fly fishing shop so you could easily call this a $15 value. The reel cover and the complimentary flies made a real impression on me – enough to form a story that was worth passing on. Brian’s commitment to exceptional customer service turned me into a lifetime Elkhorn customer. I’ll buy another rod or reel from Brian in the future. Better yet, it created a story powerful enough that I’m motivated to pass it on. A story like this sells product. Brian can compete against rod manufacturers like Sage and G Loomis by leveraging the small size of his organization to provide a personal touch – the kind of customer service larger companies have a hard time providing. I bought a 5 wt traveler rod at bob marriots about 13 or more years ago and fish it during winter about 1 time each week and spring/summer 3 to 5 times a week. It is my best rod! I have sage, loomis and diomond back but i've caught more fish and better times with your creation than any other rod i've owned! I have handed it down to my nephew now and he will enjoy it a long long time i believe. I have never fished cane and perhaps its time. :-) thanks

Hi Brian, I met your brother through XXX... He introduced me to Elkhorn Rods and Reels last year. I had been looking for a reasonably priced back-up rod for an upcoming trip to Alaska. At the last Phoenix fishing show I had the opportunity to meet you and decided to purchase your 8wt. rod and a T-3 reel. It was put to the ultimate test last week in Alaska. We timed the Silver salmon run perfectly and were into 15 pound silvers by the second day. My guide, Bob Gill and I each fished the rod for a day, then compared notes. We were impressed with the quality and performance of the rod. I had no difficulty casting a sinking line with a relatively heavy fly pattern. It held up well to the stress dished out by the big Copper River silvers. I was even more impressed with the T-3 Reel. The drag system is simple, practical and very easy to adjust. The Copper River delta is loaded with silt from glacier melt and runoff. It is not uncommon for this grit to stick to your line and work it's way into a reel. Not once did I have to stop fishing to remove the spool and rinse the silt out of the T-3 Reel. The Elkhorn Rod and Reel performed well above our expectations. Jim Tweedley Phoenix, Arizona

Brian, I bought four Elkhorn 6-pc spey rods from you at the San Rafael show in 2006 (two ES1267-6 and two ES1489-6). Since then I've used them extensively in Russia, Quebec, and Norway for Atlantic Salmon and British Columbia for steelhead. They are excellent rods. I caught Atlantics up to 28 lbs on the ES1267-6 and everything else on the ES1489-6. They attracted a lot of attention from my fellow fishermen. ... I have received a lot of interest in the six piece rods in my travels mostly because of the problems traveling with longer rod tubes, but also because of the way they (six piece spey rods) have performed.

Richard purchased his first Elkhorn fly rod in the late summer and wrote to us after testing the rod with a good friend, a tournament fly caster& You might like to know that a friend who is a competitive fly caster and I compared the EX3 with an Innovator Velocity, and 2 Sage rods, a TCR and an Xi. All loaded with similar lines. The EX3 was way ahead of the Innovator and compared well to the Sages. The big test came later in the next year with a trip up to the top end, Weipa, chasing some very serious fish in the salt flats. Here is what he has told us about the trip& The 9 wt. was great! As the proud owner of two Elkhorn travelers all that I can say is that as far as I am concerned these are some of the finest rods made at any price. I own rods that cost much more but that don't fit my casting style as well or give me anywhere near the performance that these Elkhorn rods do. Also having broken one and having sent it back for repair I can say that the customer service is second to none. Orvis took seven weeks to process and repair a rod for me, Elkhorn had the rod back in 2 days!

Brian I caught this July3-07 at the Susitna river in Alaska it took about twenty minutes to land. I caught it with an egg sucking leach on the 10wgt rod I got from you at the show in Salt Lake city. I'm very impressed with this rod and I was sure it was going to break, because it was bent in half. He was 46inchs long and was 56 lbs.I had a lot of other ones as big but I couldn't land them. I'm old enough to take the heat. Two weeks ago I was out fishing for Striped Bass in the Ct. River. I was using an 8 wt. and not getting any response at all. We saw a few but that was about it. My friend and I decided to seize the opportunity and move to a local pond for gills and LM Bass so we loaded up the boat and off we went. I switched to my 6 wt. and all was good. Pete had left all his rods on his boat and when we moved colse to shore one of his rods got tangled up in the trees. I put mine down, untangled his rod and then pushed away from the trees. Pete calls out "look, your rod seperated"... wrong. My rod broke. And I am expecting to be gone in a couple of weeks to Maine, wanting this rod in my quiver. Next day I pack it up and mail it out with a 3 day shipping time. A couple of days later I call Elkorn and leave a message that I'd like to talk to someone about the warranty turn around time. Note: Elkhorn warranties its rod against my stupidity. Ten minutes later, Brian (the owner) calls me back. He's got my rod in and is in the process of packing it up to ship it back with the replacement section. Seven days from the day I shipped the rod out it is back in my hands. Thats 6 days for the US Post office to do its job (exactly as they said it would be) and less than 8 hours turn around time for Elkhorn. Well the day before I got that rod back I am doing a hurry up and fish deal before work. I suit up in waders etc, grab my rod and reach in to get my sun glasses. I close the door and.... **&$%*&. The rod failed the slam-it-in-the-door test. All four sections were caught in the door, one was broken. Again, I go through the drill and send the rod off. On the third day, I get a call again from Brian at Elkhorn. He said that he did not have the section I needed with the proper label. The same section is used in two configurations and he would be happy to send me one, noting that the label is wrong but the section is correct. Do I care...not for a nano-second. I give him the okay and the rod is turned around again within 8 hours. Is this good customer service. No, this is MAGNIFICENT customer service. I will have both rods for my trip, thanks to Elkhorn. Is it any wonder that they are sponsors here or that I own 5 of their rods. FYI they are also nice rods to cast, have nice hardware and are affordable. I got to cast and even fish a bit with an Elkhorn 8.5' 3wt with a matching T1 Elkhorn reel over the weekend. I put an SA Mastery XPS 3wt line on it. Brian told me I could overline it easily to a WF 4 if I wanted to, but I went with the 3. This rod and reel combo looks fantastic, feels great, casts and fishes like a dream. I let about 4 other very experienced fly fishers, including 2 professionals, cast it as well; and they loved it...including Emily Whitlock. (this is my wife's rod and reel, and Emily was teaching her to cast). We were single hauling 50-55' casts pretty easily with this very light-headed line on this 3wt. And it roll casts like a dream. This one is a "chick stick." The rod and reel are raspberry pink. The reel seemed very Ross-like to me for less than half the price. And it is 100% machine-forged aircraft aluminum with a fabulous warranty. My introduction to Elkhorn has been pretty impressive so far. A buddy of mine recently ordered an Elkhorn as well. And he had a customer service issue that also went flawlessly. He considered the service "above and beyond." And he loves his rod as much and we seem to ours.

Hey Brian, I just purchased the Traveler 4 piece 3 weight rod and T1 reel this weekend. As I said I took it up on Sunday and fished the Big Thompson. Right when we got there, we had a hatch start and the trout were taking dries. Just wanted to say that the rod performed really well, and was everything I hoped it would be. Light presentation, but not a wimpy rod by any stretch of the imagination. The reel felt smooth and the drag worked great. I hooked 2 fish (missed a few more), both around 13-14 inches and got them both in. Thanks again!

I have to say the presentation is spot on for both. The finish and attention to detail are a nice touch. It just “looks like” good gear. Now for the field test and as you know, I use GLX Loomis rods and believe that they are the standard by which others can be judged. I had a good cast with the outfit you sent up on both Saturday and Sunday and was quite impressed. As you’d expect given the price differential, the Elkhorn rod does trail my favourite GLX in some ways, however it casts very nicely by any standard and, for the asking price, is really outstanding value for money. I've used way more expensive rods than this which didn't perform at anywhere near the same level. The reel to my mind is even more impressive albeit without having given the drag a good workout at this stage. It appears to compare favourably with competitors costing three and four times as much. I intend to connect the whole outfit up to a few Moreton Bay long-tail tuna and am quietly confident there'll be no problems there. On the basis of the “performance for dollar” issue which began our whole discussion, I think you're on an absolute winner with the Elkhorn fly rods and reels.”

Elkhorn ET 10 foot, six weight, – 4 piece fly rod This is a magnificent rod! I purchased this in early December 2006 and thus far have caught about 80 trout using this rod. When casting a single fly in a traditional style, this rod casts a mile and is both smooth and accurate. We also use a “three fly” method and the rod handles this with ease. I've have been fishing with an Elkhorn Traveller series rods, model ET905-4XF 5wt / 4 piece, the XF are a faster models. Overall the rod has preformed very well, casting floating lines with tiny dries and sinking line with large wets. All in all exceeding my expectations. This is an aggressive fast action rod which has loads of power from the butt to the tip, made from high modulus 100% graphite blank, these rods are very well crafted fishing tools. Versatile, in that it can generate some serious line speed for a long distance cast and also for punching those lines into adverse windy conditions. Or by dampening the casting style, the rod becomes smooth for accurate presentations. The line pickup is also very good. The Elkhorn Traveller XF rods are light, responsive, sensitive and well balanced throughout the casting range, long or short. I'm happy with the rods precision, using it in rivers and lakes. It's become more than a back up rod and I have matched it up with the Elkhorn MA 2 Large arbour reel which is silky smooth! It works for me. TA Traveller 4 piece 4 weight 9 foot Elkhorn Rod I have owned my TA Traveller Elkhorn rod for the last 2 trout seasons and I have used it in large rivers and small streams. It is a light rod in hand which I can fish with all day and not get tired. I'm not the most experienced caster but this rod loads easily for long casts for distant fish and casts accurately and delicately for close in precision fishing and placement of the fly. In short its a lot of rod for the price you pay, so do yourself a favour and try one. Enjoy'.

Brian, I wanted to drop you a note and express my satisfaction with the Elkhorn rods that I own. I just got back from a trip to Alaska where we fished for five species of Salmon and rainbow trout. I have purchased a 6 wt and 8 wt rods from you at the Sportsmans Exp in SLC the last two years. I must say that the Elkhorn rods held up to the big game fish (8 wt) and outperformed my 10wt XXXXXXX that ended up breaking on a King. Dear Brian, I was impressed with the repair service that you provided after my rod tip mysteriously broke when my son borrowed my 8"0" Traveler. I mailed the tip pieces Monday and received a new tip on Saturday, and it fit perfectly. Also thank you for repairing the old tip; I will keep it in the case as an emergency back-up.

Yesterday, after my rod disaster I sent of a email to Brian at Elkhorn flyrods. About 15 seconds later I got an automated reply from their site saying someone would get in touch with me. Before I finished reading the auto reply the phone rang. It was Brian explaining to me how to fix my rod. This is less than 30 seconds from htting the send button. It can't get any better than that. The only thing that came close to that was a reply from someone on this site within about 1 minute, and I mean less that 60 seconds. What can I say. Brian, I bought a T3 reel and 6/7 wt. flyrod at the Bellevue show this year. I really love it. I took it to Argentina and let the guide cast it. Hi Joe & Amy, I received the 4 wt on Monday, loaded it with SA Gpx and am very pleased. Sitting on a stream bank (with my leg still in a cast) it allows me to shoot tight loops far and accurate, roll cast a ton of line and mend cleanly. I'm sure the 3 wt will be nice to stalk the smaller streams around here too, once I am bipedal again. Attached is a pic from my first trip to the upper Delaware(no wonder I love it up there!). He was sipping at the tail-end of a pool as they seem to do all day long up there. Thanks for the great service. Looking forward to meeting you both. Alex

Just wanted to let you guys know how much I enjoy my Elkhorn fly rod. I have a 3-wt Traveler series, which I purchased with a T-series reel for a grand total of $150 at a fishing show. I remember how helpful the representatives were, and I got to go outside and test any rod that I wanted. The 3-wt was perfect, and I proudly show it to other fisherman who are very impressed with your work. Anyways, it's held up great over numerous backpacking trips, and has golden, rainbow, brown, brook, and cutthroat trout to it's credit. Thanks for good memories and good times with a great fly rod.
